This seat is currently held by a far-right, anti-choice Republican named Winsome Earle-Sears who is now the Republican frontrunner for Governor.

Hashmi has a history of overcoming the odds. When she first ran for office, she surprised political pundits when she defeated the party establishment’s hand-picked candidate for the nomination. She then went on to win in the general election in a swing district that had been represented by a Republican for decades – by TEN points. As a result, Democrats gained a critical one-seat majority in the Chamber, and Hashmi was able to cast a tie-breaking vote to enact abortion rights into law.

Hashmi was motivated to run for office initially in opposition to Trump, and has challenged the Trump and Youngkin agenda in the General Assembly ever since.

If she wins the primary election, Hashmi will face off against an extremist Republican talk-radio host, John Reid. His campaign website features MAGA-inspired rhetoric against Democrats, how he wants to “free education from leftist indoctrination,” stop “wokeness,” and continue “his fight against boys in girls sports and the extreme trans-agenda being forced upon our children.” Additionally, he had made it clear that he is anti-choice.

His campaign website states, “Who better to make our conservative moral case than a man like John Reid?”

Virginia is a competitive state – and Hashmi’s primary is no joke. It will take all of us to ensure that we win this seat, take back the executive offices, and protect and expand the pro-choice majority in the House of Delegates. We are so proud to stand with Senator Hashmi in this fight.
