This is the vote that will define the 2026 election: House Republicans just voted for devastating cuts to Medicaid.

After weeks of intense infighting, this spending package now heads to the Senate. If passed, it would slash health care, food assistance, and raise the cost of living for millions of Americans, just to put more money in the pockets of billionaires.

This is the signature bill of Trump’s second term. He warned House Republicans yesterday that a no vote on the legislation amounted to the “ultimate betrayal”—you’re either with him or you’re against him. And House Republicans fell in line.

A month ago, a dozen swing district House Republicans warned GOP leaders that they wouldn’t back a budget package that included massive cuts to Medicaid. They just voted to enact the largest Medicaid cut in American history.

 
What else did they just vote for?

- These cuts to Medicaid would not only kick as many as 14 million people off their health care, they would also result in hospital service cuts and closures. 

- It would also bar Medicaid from providing funding to Planned Parenthood’s essential health services like cancer screenings as long as the organization continues to provide abortions. 

- The bill also includes the largest cuts to food assistance in US history that will impact millions of families, seniors, and school-age children.

- Huge cuts were also made to clean energy programs, which will result in higher electric bills.

- Cuts to student loans, loan forgiveness, and Pell Grant programs will make college even less affordable for millions of Americans. 

Numerous other provisions are buried in the bill—like cutting taxes on gun silencers—and House Republicans caved on all of it to give Trump the win he demanded.
 
They’ve shown us what their priorities are and it’s up to us to remind voters of that every day until next November.
