John,

Early this morning, we got President Donald Trump’s big, ugly bill. By one vote, the House of Representatives passed a bill gutting Medicaid, the Pell Grant program and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; cutting Medicare; making college less affordable; and using public education funding as a piggy bank to create a school voucher program that’s essentially a new tax shelter for the well-off. And why? To pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton voted against it.

Economists are saying this would be the largest transfer of wealth from the poor and working class to the wealthy in our history. And given the spike in the deficit, we are not just paying for these tax cuts with spending cuts; our kids and grandkids will be paying for generations.

Several more steps remain before this bill becomes law, so we need to keep up the pressure. The first thing we need to do is to let every representative know that we are watching.

Send a letter to your Representative right now thanking them for voting against the bill.

Let’s be clear about the bill Republicans just rushed through the House so they could prance out of town for the long weekend:

  • 14 million people will lose access to healthcare.
  • Seniors will lose Medicare coverage.
  • 11 million people—including 4 million kids—will lose food assistance.
  • 4 million students will see their Pell grants reduced or eliminated.
  • And for what? To pay for more tax cuts for billionaires.

Trump promised to protect Medicaid and Medicare as recently as this week, but at his party’s very first opportunity it chose to give money to billionaires and take away healthcare for everyone else.

Several House Democrats told me Republicans were surprised by how many emails and phone calls they were getting. That’s why they rushed this bill through overnight. House Republicans want to cut Medicaid, Medicare and SNAP but not face the consequences. Let’s let them know that won’t happen.

Send a message to your Representative now.

In unity,
