On World Bee Day, the City of San Diego proudly unveiled its new Bee City USA sign at the San Diego Zoo. San Diego’s Bee City USA designation reflects our deep commitment to pollinator protection. This celebration marked the culmination of an initiative I launched nearly two years ago alongside our city’s environmental leaders. As former Chair of the Environment Committee and representative of a coastal district that includes pollinator sanctuaries like Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, I’m proud to continue championing stronger habitat protections and responsible pesticide practices. These efforts are critical to the health of our region’s ecosystems, agriculture, and food supply.

SURF, SAND, AND SAFETY TIPS

Memorial Day weekend means bigger crowds at the beach. It is important to stay safe and help keep our beaches beautiful for everyone. Watch kids in the water, swim near lifeguards, and stay aware of strong currents or rip tides. Remember to stay hydrated and use sunscreen. With so many people around, be patient, respect marine life, and follow all posted safety signs to ensure a fun and safe weekend. Please also do your part by picking up trash and never leaving litter behind—let’s protect our treasured beaches.

UNDER SAN DIEGO’S SEAS

Birch Aquarium is making waves with the Living Seas grand opening—its largest upgrade since 1992. The exhibit celebrates San Diego’s marine biodiversity, spotlights conservation, and deepens understanding of ocean health. I was honored to join Scripps Institution of Oceanography in marking this exciting new chapter. Thank you for inspiring San Diegans to protect our ocean and its vital role in our region’s health, economy, and cultural identity. And thank you to the Adam R. Scripps Foundation for your philanthropy.

PLUG IN AND POWER UP

The City of San Diego has completed the first round of new electric vehicle (EV) charger installations. Over the past two weeks, EVerged—our new EV charging partner—replaced old or broken chargers in a dozen City parking lots. These new chargers are provided and maintained by EVerged at no cost to the City, thanks to a 10-year agreement. The City provides the space and receives a share of the revenue. Over the next five years, chargers will be added to about 400 City locations, including parks, beaches, and public buildings, helping us meet Climate Action goals and making EV charging easier for residents and visitors alike.

In celebration of Clean Air Month, EV charging is free throughout May at the following locations:

  • Bonita Cove, Mission Bay – 1100 W. Mission Bay Dr.
  • Fleet Science Center, Balboa Park – 1875 El Prado
  • Hourglass Community Park, Mira Mesa – 10440 Black Mountain Rd.
  • Mission Bay Aquatic Center – 1001 Santa Clara Pl.
  • South De Anza Cove – 2688 E. Mission Bay Dr.
  • Nobel Athletic Fields, La Jolla – 8810 Judicial Dr.
  • Ocean Air Park, Carmel Valley – 4770 Fairport Way
  • Ocean Beach Parking Lot – 1950 Abbott St.
  • Otay Mesa-Nestor Library – 3003 Coronado Ave.
  • Rancho Bernardo-Glassman Rec Center – 18448 W. Bernardo Dr.
  • San Diego Central Library – 330 Park Blvd.
  • San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park – 2920 Zoo Dr.

#TEAMLACAVA IN THE DISTRICT

The annual PB Community Expo connects Pacific Beach residents and local organizations. It was great to hear from families, engage with community groups, and discuss how District 1 can continue supporting Pacific Beach at City Hall. Thank you to all who came out and stopped at the #TeamLaCava tent. Thank you also to the PB Town Council for organizing the event and to Pacific Beach Elementary for hosting.
