John,
In the dead of night last night, House Republicans rammed through their budget legislation to slash Medicaid, steal from working families, and give more money to the mega-rich.
The thousand-page bill ended up passing by a single vote early this morning, with House Democrats united in opposition. It now goes to the Senate, which will have its own process over the coming weeks.
If the Republican budget ends up passing into law, it would mean 13 million people losing their health care coverage. It would mean a new job loss penalty for millions who rely on Medicaid, and an automatic half-trillion dollars in cuts to Medicare. Millions more would lose food assistance. All so the mega-rich can get more tax cuts.
There’s been a lot of talk since the election about Republicans re-branding themselves as a “working class” party.
But the bill that just passed the House proves that Republicans are the same party we always knew they were — one that steals from working families in order to give more money to billionaires.
Over the coming weeks and months, we will need to:
-
Do all we can to defeat this budget in the Senate and stop the worst parts of it from becoming law,
-
Prepare for 2026 and make sure House Republicans are held accountable for their betrayal of their own constituents by ending their majority, and
-
Grow our movement of working people coming together across our differences to stop the authoritarian right and fight for a country that works for all of us, at every level of government.
The next few days, weeks, and months will be critical in these fights — and we need to be prepared for whatever comes our way. If you are able, please chip in what you can to power our organizing work:

Republicans are proving once again that they are about as far from a “working class” party as you can get. And over the decades, far too many Democrats have strayed toward the billionaire class as well.
At the Working Families Party, we’re building something different — a party actually of, by, and for working people.
One that is proud to join arm-in-arm with all those fighting back against the authoritarian right. One that wins victories at the state and local level that impact people’s real lives. One that elects dynamic leaders to office at every level who are actually accountable to working class voters.
Thank you for being a part of it.
In solidarity,
Working Families Party
