Dear John,
House Republicans continue negotiations on what has been called the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that can be passed through the “reconciliation” process that doesn’t require 60 votes in the Senate. This means that Republicans can do whatever they want, in terms of fiscal or budgetary impact, without needing ANY Democrat votes. This is a truly unique and rare opportunity to pass significant 10-year legislation that will affect Americans for decades. But, while the bill will certainly be BIG, it needs a lot of work to be truly BEAUTIFUL for America.
The current version of the bill contains some very positive and important components, such as extending and expanding the 2017 Trump tax cuts and providing additional funding for national defense and homeland security.
However, the bill fails to deliver true and meaningful spending cuts, and is projected to increase the national debt to OVER $60 TRILLION over the next 10 years! And the bill immediately increases the debt limit by $5 trillion!
The main problem with the bill is that, in typical DC Swamp fashion, the supposed spending cuts don’t go into effect for 5 years. That means that they will NEVER materialize, because a future Congress can just delay or eliminate them. The House Freedom Caucus is currently and courageously holding up the bill, demanding that the bill 1) doesn’t increase the deficit, 2) contains larger spending cuts, and 3) the spending cuts are implemented immediately.
More specifically, the Freedom Caucus is fighting to ensure the bill eliminates the trillion-dollar “Green Raw Deal” climate credits from Biden’s Inflation “Reduction” Act (IRA). And the Freedom Caucus is fighting to ensure the bill reforms the trillion-dollar Medicaid program, by reinstating work requirements for able-bodied working-age individuals, reversing the polices that caused the massive expansion during the Obama and Biden administrations, making benefits temporary to end a culture of dependency, and excluding benefits for illegal aliens. These spending cuts and reforms will save hundreds of billions of dollars per year, and they need to go into effect immediately!
