Dear Friend,

We just sued the Trump administration to stop its harmful attacks on the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument.

President Trump is illegally attempting to open roughly 400,000 square miles of protected national monument waters to commercial fishing, once again showing total disregard for our nation’s laws.

Earthjustice goes to court to ensure that Trump cannot harm our planet with the stroke of a pen. Donate today to support our lawsuits and your gift will be matched $2:$1 to triple your impact.

The marine monument, located south and west of the Hawaiian islands, is one of the largest and most intact marine protected places in the world, nearly five times the size of all U.S. national parks combined. Twenty-two endangered marine species and millions of seabirds call the Pacific Islands Heritage National Monument home.

The monument designation, and associated ban on commercial fishing, provides needed protection to scientific and historical treasures in one of the most spectacular and unique ocean ecosystems on earth. Allowing commercial fishing would disrupt this fragile ecosystem by depleting fish stocks and harming marine life through bycatch. It threatens sharks, a key predator that keeps the food chain in balance, and seabirds, which nourish reefs with vital nutrients in their guano.

In both his terms, Trump has repeatedly attempted to strip protections from public lands and waters and offer extractive industries carte blanche — all at the expense of critical species, local communities and tribal interests, and our climate.

The monument is significant to Pacific Islander Indigenous communities. It honors the heritage, traditional practices, ancestral pathways, and stopping points for indigenous Pacific Islander voyagers who navigated the massive expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

Earthjustice has spent decades fighting to protect wild places and public waters. We’ve won over 1,000 cases, many just like this one. In every case, we represent our clients free of charge thanks to your support.

Please consider making a gift to support our lawsuits and fight back against the Trump administration’s illegal attacks on the environment.
