The Man Who Started Memorial Day

157 years ago before the internet, when division was rampant, and much blood had been shed for freedom, a "holiday" was launched to help us remember and hold dear those who had given their all.

On May 5, 1868, Major General John A. Logan, who had served in multiple roles in the Civil War and surrounding battles, set aside May 30th as Decoration Day to commemorate fallen soldiers by adorning their graves with flowers.

It eventually became known as Memorial Day.

General Logan’s order declared:

“We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance….Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.”

The tradition continues and now more than ever we must teach the next generation to value that which many have paid so dearly. Here is our charge to you fellow Michigan citizens,

"If other eyes grow dull and other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remains in us." - Major General Logan
