1) Tax Cut Victory At Last

By one vote, the House passed HR1 ([link removed]) - the tax bill officially titled the One Big Beautiful Bill Act - early this morning. Speaker Mike Johnson is the hero here. He said he would deliver by Memorial Day and he did. This is a big win for prosperity and tax sanity.

We will dissect more of the bill's multitude of final details tomorrow, and report the good and the ugly. In a 1,118 page bill, Lord knows what mischief was inserted.

But this bill, above all, else extends the Trump tax cuts and prevents a $4 trillion tax increase on January 1.

The vote this morning was also another sign that the rudderless Left is lost in a foggy wilderness. Every House Democrat voted for the largest tax increase in American history with middle class families facing a $2,500 added tax bill next year.

We want to thank all of the members of the Unleash Prosperity Now's Tax Cut Victory Alliance (the effort from our 501 (c)(4) partner organization) for securing this big win.

Next up for the alliance is to improve the bill - make it bigger and more beautiful - as it moves to the Senate next week.

Reps. Thomas Massie and Warren Davidson were the only Republicans to vote "No" on the bill. House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris voted "present."

2) Senate Unanimously Approved No Tax on Tips

In case you missed it, earlier this week the Senate adopted Trump's no tax on tips initiative on a unanimous consent request.

Amazingly, despite all the leftist criticisms of this "gimmick," not one member of the Senate objected.

Who says there's no bipartisanship in Congress anymore?

3) Five Years After COVID, Red States Dominate Jobs Market

Here's the latest chart from the state employment data released this week.

Red states are still overwhelmingly the best performers in terms of job growth compared to pre-pandemic levels, with five states managing over 10% cumulative job growth in just over five years. The top states have two things in common: they are all right-to-work states and they all have low or no income taxes.

In the first two years after the Spring of 2020, job growth was almost solely dependent on whether states kept their economies locked down. Blue states paid a heavy price for their catastrophic fetal position COVID responses.

Has that lesson been learned?

4) Land of the Free?

Here's a residual effect of the Biden era.

International polls show a median of 81% of people in 142 countries express satisfaction with their freedom. Dozens of those countries are dictatorships or authoritarian states, so one wonders just how much some of their citizens were free to comment.

Regardless of the accuracy of those numbers, it's clear that Americans are increasingly worried.

"For the third year in a row, Americans are less satisfied with their personal freedom than the rest of the world, including their peers in other wealthy, market-based economies," reports the Gallup Poll in a new survey.
[link removed]

Specifically, Americans' satisfaction "with their freedom to choose what they do with their lives" started falling after 2020, when it was 85 percent. Maybe that's what happens when the government tries to tell you what kind of car you can drive.

Last year, only 72% of Americans said they were satisfied with their freedom to choose what they do with their lives.

This trend may soon reverse. The Big Beautiful Bill is nearing the finish. Hundreds of petty regulations from the flow of shower heads to restrictions on gas stoves have been swept away by Trump executive orders. The dismantling of the DEI culture in many parts of American life means people are more free to express themselves. It will be interesting to see if next year's Gallup survey in the U.S. shows an increase in the number of people who believe freedom is on the rise.

5) The Biden Coverup Scandal. “Symptom of Broader Disease”

Dean Phillips, a successful businessman and former Minnesota Congressman, challenged Joe Biden in the 2024 Democratic primaries because he couldn't find anyone else who would.

Now that the coverup of Biden's perilous health has been proven, Phillips says there are lessons to be learned about the "honesty deficit" in Washington:
[link removed]

If we don't reflect on the lack of honesty from the White House all the way down to House leadership, to members of Congress--and by the way, this is not unique to the Biden enterprise--this is a symptom of a broader disease."

Having now been a member of Congress and seen firsthand how this incentive system works, I do understand why this happened. And that's why we have to change it.... if you wish to become a leader, if you aspire to national office, if you get out of line... and now I know why nobody would accept my call or take that charge to enter the primary, because if they had and it hadn't worked out, their political career was over.

So I think this begs the question about how do we create a new incentive system for people who are rewarded for being honest and people of integrity rather than being punished?
