BJS has released two reports that present findings on homicide victimization based on data from the FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Reports (SHR) and from BJS’s and the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) Estimation Program.
The BJS bulletin, Homicide Victimization in the United States, 2023, describes the number and rate of homicide victimizations reported by law enforcement agencies in the United States, including victim demographic characteristics, victim-offender relationships, the type of weapon(s) present, and the number of victims involved in the incident.
Homicide Victimization in the United States, 2023 (NCJ 309889) was written by BJS Statistician Lizabeth Remrey, PhD. Firearm-Involved Homicide of Children Age 11 or Younger, 2014–2023 (NCJ 309947) was written by former BJS Statistician James T. Hubbell, PhD. These reports, related documents, and additional information about BJS’s statistical publications and programs are available on the BJS website at bjs.ojp.gov.
BJS has also released the 2023 National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) National Estimates. The datasets and related codebooks are available through an Application Programming Interface (API). The NIBRS National Estimates API includes nationally representative data at the incident, offense, and victim levels for crime reported by law enforcement.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics of the U.S. Department of Justice is the principal federal agency responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating reliable statistics on crime and criminal justice in the United States.
