Democratic Senator Totally Schools Kristi Noem Over This Key Constitutional Right

It’s Maggie Hassan with an important update:

In case you missed it, yesterday I went head to head with Kristi Noem in a Senate hearing.

When I asked Noem, Donald Trump’s Secretary of Homeland Security, to define habeas corpus — a basic legal principle — she couldn’t.

Let me make this clear: Habeas corpus isn’t just a Latin phrase — it’s a critical protection that requires the government to bring someone they are detaining before a court and explain the legal basis for arresting them.

Right now, it’s a fundamental freedom that the Trump administration is considering stripping away.

We MUST band together to stand up for the rule of law and oppose the Trump administration’s unconstitutional actions.

If you can, please chip in to help Kirsten Gillibrand and Democrats like me continue to take on the GOP and call out their human rights abuses:

A note from Kirsten:

Friend, I am truly honored to have won reelection, and I promise to continue the critical work toward bipartisan solutions for New Yorkers as we enter this new term.

While we had many victories in New York this election season, our fight to retake control of the Senate is far from over.

Please, donate today to make sure my team and I can continue securing crucial progress on the issues that matter the most and help flip the Senate blue in 2026.

Thank you,

Kirsten Gillibrand
