Friends — this week we are in an all-out fight to protect critical programs from devastating budget cuts.
Late Sunday night, my Republican colleagues narrowly passed their 1,100+ page disaster of a budget bill through committee, and Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing for a full vote on it before Memorial Day — with the hopes that Americans will be too busy enjoying their long weekend to notice.
There’s a reason House Republicans are debating this bill in the middle of the night, avoiding their constituents, and being shady about what’s included – it’s a morally bankrupt bill, plain and simple.
Here’s some of what’s in it:
* $625 billion in cuts to Medicaid, which millions of Americans rely on for health insurance.
* $300 billion in cuts to SNAP, the nutrition assistance program that helps feed children and families all over the country.
* Trillions of dollars in tax breaks to billionaires and massive corporations at the expense of these critical programs.
Those numbers may sound abstract, so let’s be clear about what passing the bill and implementing these cuts would do:
→ Medicaid provides health care for 1 in 4 Americans – including 40% of all U.S. children and 80% of children living in poverty. In San Diego County, that’s 1 in 6 people. Without it, more people will have to rely on emergency services to get the care they need, paying more and further straining our hospitals.
→ SNAP helps more than 40 million Americans afford fresh produce and groceries — families with kids, seniors, and people with disabilities. Without it, more kids will go hungry, and businesses that accept SNAP benefits will be impacted too.
The cuts would hit children, seniors, and people with disabilities hardest. They’d shutter hospitals. Raise premiums. And experts say they could cause over 21,000 avoidable deaths.
And I can tell you this — plenty of the people who will be devastated by these cuts are represented by Republicans in Congress. So why is the GOP gutting essential programs their own constituents rely on?
Because Donald Trump promised his ultra-wealthy donors and corporate CEO pals massive tax breaks. And now, House Republicans are doing his bidding, no matter how cruel (or deeply unpopular) these cuts are across the country and even in their own districts.
I’m going to do everything I can to stop this budget from going through, but it could be brought to the floor as soon as today , and I need your help to build momentum against it.
Will you add your name right now to stand against the GOP’s dangerous budget bill? [[link removed]]

Then, forward this email to three friends who’ll speak out too. The more public outrage we build, the harder it will be for Republicans to jam this through quietly.
This budget is a cruel strategy just to make the rich richer, and I won’t stop fighting it.
