Donald Trump just seriously escalated his attempt to plunge our country into authoritarianism by filing criminal charges against a Democratic member of Congress for conducting oversight of his administration.

Two weeks ago, the Trump administration arrested the Democratic mayor of Newark, New Jersey, outside of an ICE detention facility and tried to hinder three members of Congress from conducting oversight there.¹

And on Monday, the Trump administration filed criminal charges against Representative LaMonica McIver (D,NJ-10), one of the representatives at the visit. Rep. McIver condemned the federal charges against her as “political intimidation” and—not backing down—said, “I’m looking forward to my day in court.”²

Make no mistake, John, Rep. McIver is being targeted for attempting to ensure the safety and well-being of her constituents, and these charges are meant to intimidate elected officials—and anyone who opposes Trump—into silence. But we will not be silenced.

That is why MoveOn is today naming Rep. McIver as an inaugural member of our Democratic Champions Fund, a new project to show elected officials who are taking bold action that we all have their backs.
