John,
As you may have seen, a tragedy is unfolding in Georgia because of the state’s abortion ban. Adriana Smith, a 30-year-old mother and nurse, was declared brain dead in February, but the state is forcing her family to keep her on life support against their wishes—so that she can serve as an incubator. When Adriana was declared brain dead, she was 9-weeks pregnant.
Earlier this year, Adriana sought care at an emergency room after experiencing headaches that as a nurse, she knew to be abnormal. Sent home without adequate testing, she soon became unresponsive because of blood clots in her brain, and was declared brain dead.
We don’t know if Adriana received the standard care for her symptoms, but we do know that health outcomes for Black women, especially Black pregnant women, are often worse because of racism and unequal treatment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black women have a maternal mortality rate that’s more than three times the rate for white women. Adriana Smith did not receive the care she needed to save her life. As SisterSong has stated, “It is deadly to be Black and pregnant in a state where reproductive care is limited and criminalized.”
Even in death, Adriana’s dignity and humanity have been blatantly disregarded, as well as the wishes of her parents and her family.
This is a gut-wrenching, horrifying situation, but our pro-choice leaders in Georgia are leading the fight back.
Vote Pro-Choice endorsed State Senator Nabilah Islam Parkes is demanding answers from Georgia’s MAGA leaders, and refusing to let them hide from the cruel consequences of their extreme ban. She has personally delivered letters to Governor Kemp about the issue, raising awareness for Adriana and her family.
As Vote Pro-Choice endorsed State Senator RaShaun Kemp put it, “This is not just a legal issue. It’s a profound moral failing. No family should be compelled to witness such suffering due to rigid and inhumane laws.”
THIS is the reality of abortion bans. They erode standards of care. They inflame existing prejudice in our systems. And they cause violence against women and families.
Adriana’s story is heartbreaking, and we are devastated for everyone who loves her. We’re also more committed than ever to continuing to empower leaders who will fight against this needless suffering, and for the rights and futures of our families.
Thank you for your unwavering support.
In solidarity,
Sara Tabatabaie
