Did you know it’s been estimated that for each individual death by suicide, 135 people are directly and personally affected? In recognition of this number, we ask you to consider making a gift of $135 to help us reach our goal of a Million in May for Mental Health Awareness Month.

Vuong Tran of AFSP’s Oregon Chapter is one of many AFSP volunteers in local chapters across the country who has used his personal experience to fuel his dedication to this cause. After surviving a suicide attempt, receiving help from his local church, and spending five days in a psychiatric hospital, Vuong found his way to AFSP, through which he shares a message of hope with others who have experienced similar pain:

“Volunteering is a way for me to spread light in a world in which there is darkness. I’ve learned of resources available to people in crisis that I didn’t know about during my own dark period, like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which AFSP supports through its advocacy efforts; and the support available to survivors of suicide loss, such as the Healing Conversations program and Survivor Day events.

As a suicide attempt survivor, my message to those who are struggling is that there is, in fact, hope out there. Although things may feel dark, there is a beautiful community ready to love and support you. No matter what your connection to this cause, no one has to suffer alone.”

You can [read Vuong’s full story]([link removed]) in AFSP’s 2024 Annual Report, where you can learn more about our local chapters, Out of the Darkness Walks, and important efforts toward loss support, education, research, advocacy, and more.

We can’t continue our mission without your support. Help spread light by contributing to our Million in May goal today.
