In a hearing before the United States Senate earlier today, the Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem demonstrated not only that she has no respect for the constitutional right to habeas corpus...
...she doesn’t even know what it is.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, Senator Andy Kim even gave her another bite at the apple. Somehow, her second answer was even worse.
Secretary Noem, the right to a writ of habeas corpus is enumerated in Article One of the Constitution.
It means people like you can’t hold anyone indefinitely, against their will. It means you have to charge them with a crime and give them the opportunity to defend themselves in court. It means everyone gets due process. It is essential to our democracy.
The Trump Administration wants to suspend habeas corpus. They want to be able to arrest whoever they want and imprison them. They started with the first people on their list — undocumented immigrants. They’ve begun using it against legal residents. Before long, they will use it against American citizens.
Much of the work we do at VoteVets is aimed at long-term change. We must defeat MAGA Republicans at the ballot box, because that is how we can stop Trump from turning our country into a dictatorship. But we also recognize that change can’t wait, and that we have to work now to save our democracy.
That’s why we’re challenging the Trump Administration on multiple fronts — including in court. VoteVets is involved in several lawsuits that aim to stop Trump’s power grabs, and we’ve already notched wins against him. But, as you can imagine, these wins don’t come cheap.
That is why we write to you today, and it is why we are respectfully asking:
Chip in $5 or whatever you can to VoteVets to support our work.
