So why is he still sitting in ICE detention two months later?
Dear John,
In March, our client Ilia Chernov won his asylum case in a Louisiana immigration court.
But as of now—two months after winning asylum—he's still sitting in immigration detention, at the notorious Winn Correctional Center, facing abuse and discrimination.
It is because of your support that our Immigration Justice Campaign is able to reach detained clients like Ilia and provide free legal services for immigrants who would otherwise navigate our complicated immigration system without a lawyer.
In his case, Ilia entered the U.S. in the way the government requested, via an appointment made through the CBP One app. He had an open-and-shut asylum case due to the extreme danger he faces in Russia as a political dissident and his LGBTQ identity. He has no criminal record and came to the U.S. the “right” way. Ilia won asylum two months ago, yet he’s been in detention, funded by taxpayer dollars, for almost a year.
Ilia is one of many who are being unjustly detained. There are countless others who are being stripped of due process and swept up in inhumane raids. Please share Ilia's story to help highlight the injustice of this system.
