Dear Friend,

Did you know that a Canadian prime minister with a majority of the seats – a majority government – has more control and power than a US president or a UK prime minister? Strange but true.

The US Constitution created separation of powers – separating Legislative and Executive. In Canada, a prime minister with a majority government has 100% of the power, controlling the Legislative and Executive. And due to the steady "presidentialization" of our politics, while PMs in other Commonwealth countries can be ousted and replaced by the caucus, in Canada we have adopted US-style conventions to elect party leaders. The caucus is powerless.

Witness the efforts of Liberal MPs for months to convince Justin Trudeau it was time to go. Margaret Thatcher was not given a choice by her caucus. They simply made John Major the PM, replacing the Iron Lady.

That is why the First Past the Post system is so dangerous for Canada. A prime minister can gain 100% of the power with less than 50% public support. What if we had a right-wing populist in Canada as bad as Donald Trump? The only way to be sure such a person could not get 100% of the power is to fix our voting system – while there is still time. Only First Past the Post allows for such "false majority" governments, perverting the public will.

First Past The Post distorts the will of the voters, discourages true representation, and perpetuates a system that blocks progress on critical issues like climate action, affordable housing, and social justice. But we can change that—and Elizabeth May is at the forefront of the fight for electoral reform.

With a Green seat in Parliament, Elizabeth can pressure the government to take action on what really matters. In a minority parliament, where holding the confidence of the House could come down to one or two votes, Greens could hold the balance of power—and that means we could have the power to insist on change we urgently need, like electoral reform and climate action.

But we don’t have much time.

Another election is likely in the next two years. To grow our movement and elect more Green MPs, we need your help now.

We’ve set an ambitious goal: raise $100,000 before Parliament resumes on May 26. These funds will support our electoral reform campaign, amplify Elizabeth’s voice, and prepare for the next election, whenever it comes.
