While the country slept, Lizzie was fighting through the night to protect our health care.

For more than 26 hours, Lizzie fought back against the Republican budget that would gut Medicaid, eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood, and put health care out of reach for millions—all so the GOP can give billionaires like Elon Musk the biggest tax cut in American history.

Republicans are not just proposing harmful cuts to Medicaid and reproductive care—they’re bypassing the normal Congressional funding process to do it.  This isn’t about fiscal responsibility.  It’s about giving tax breaks to the billionaires.

Here’s what’s at stake:

❌ Medicaid coverage for children.
❌ Support for seniors in nursing homes.
❌ Access to maternal health care and to essential reproductive health care at Planned Parenthood centers nationwide, including annual exams, cancer screenings, pap smears, STI testing, and family planning.

That’s not an exaggeration.  Republicans keep saying that they aren’t cutting Medicaid.  But they are implementing programs that are designed to kick people off the Medicaid rolls—even people who qualify.  In reviewing this budget bill, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that it will take away health care for nearly 14 million Americans through a combination of new requirements and failure to extend tax subsidies for the ACA marketplace.  

Bottom line: This bill will make things harder, more expensive, and riskier for everyone.  And it’s not just people who rely on Medicaid who are at risk.  Emergency rooms will be overwhelmed, chronic illnesses will go untreated, and states and hospitals will be forced to shoulder more financial burden.  

As Lizzie pointed out, across Texas, people rely on Medicaid for the care they need to live lives of meaning with dignity.  In TX-07, 32% of children depend on Medicaid.  And across the state, Medicaid covers half of all births.

If Republicans get their way, Medicaid funding will be cut—not to balance the budget, not to reduce the national debt, not to improve care for people in the program.  The funding cut to Medicaid (and also to food stamps) is going to pay for tax cuts for Elon Musk and his billionaire buddies.

Lizzie is fighting to stop these cruel cuts.  She’s standing up for children, seniors, people with disabilities, and hardworking families—and she needs us with her.
