John,
In 27 states, it’s perfectly legal for utility companies to shut off your
power during the hottest days of summer.
And with another hot summer on the horizon — with deadly heat waves made
worse by the climate crisis — losing power will leave people without air
conditioning in extreme temperatures, threatening their health and
safety.^1
These utility companies are putting profits before people, and there are
life-or-death consequences. In the summer of 2023, an Arizona woman died
after her power was cut over a measly $51 debt.
It’s not right, John, but we can
build the public pressure to stop them!
[ [link removed] ]Will you send a letter urging Congress to ban utility shutoffs during
heat waves before summer officially begins?

Private, for-profit utility companies have monopolized regional markets
all over the country, often leaving us without the freedom to choose who
to pay for electricity and heat. When there’s only one option, what choice
do we have?
Though these utilities market themselves as providing energy as a public
service, their actions prove they’re only motivated by one thing: profit.
They spend our money on unreliable, expensive fossil fuels that will burn
down our planet, and on their own lobbying efforts to slow the transition
to clean, renewable energy.
Then, they raise our rates to pad their wallets and maximize their
profits, while turning off our power in seconds if we don’t pay them
enough — even when it could kill us.
[ [link removed] ]We need to stop the shutoffs. Join us in demanding that Congress ban
utility shutoffs during dangerous heat waves today!
The more of us who speak out, the more pressure we’re building and the
sooner we can stop these life-threatening shutoffs in every state.
In solidarity,
Candice Fortin for Team 350
