Friends,
It’s me again — sharing more updates directly with you on what I’ve been doing to fight back against President Trump, and what you can do too. As always, let me know if you have any feedback, what you like (or what you don’t like), and what you want to see!
3 things I did in the past few weeks to push back against Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and House Republicans:
1. I joined CBFD Indivisible’s monthly meeting , talking about all the ways I’m fighting the Trump Administration and conducting congressional oversight. It was great to answer questions from folks for almost an hour. I’m so grateful for the chance to connect with my constituents whenever I’m home!
2. I participated in the House Armed Services Committee’s markup of part of the Republican majority’s horrific reconciliation bill that adds $150 billion **more** to our defense budget without improving the quality of life of our service members and their families. During the markup, I introduced an amendment to prevent any of that money from being spent on Secretary Hegseth’s rumored ✨makeup studio✨ at the Pentagon (I wish I was joking). Every single Republican on the committee voted against my amendment.
3. I waived onto the Oversight Committee’s DOGE Subcommittee — meaning I temporarily joined the subcommittee to question witnesses at a hearing. MAGA-loving Marjorie Taylor Greene chairs the subcommittee and organized a hearing on…(drumroll, please)…USA Fencing…all as a ruse to yell about trans kids, cozy up closer to Donald Trump, and distract from the Republican majority’s efforts to gut Medicaid. I didn’t want to let MTG’s deranged remarks go unanswered — you can watch my remarks here [[link removed]] .
3 things you can do to fight back and make a difference in your community:
1. Sign up for the “No Kings Day of Action” [[link removed]] on June 14 and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same. Millions showed up across the country on April 5 to stand up to Donald Trump and Elon Musk — and this march promises to be even bigger. Mark it on your calendars and start organizing your network. If you’re in San Diego, the event starts at 10am at Waterfront Park — I hope to see you there!
2. Call Republican Members of Congress to sign onto Democrats’ discharge petition to protect Medicaid and SNAP. House Democrats have filed a discharge petition to force the Republican majority to consider Rep. Brendan Boyle’s bill, the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act . We only need four Republicans to join us and sign our discharge petition. You can call the U.S. House switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to speak to Republican Members of Congress.
3. Keep showing up. We are five, exhausting months into Trump’s second term. His Administration is tearing at the fabric of our democracy and committing injustices at breakneck speed. But they want us to be tired, to get distracted, and to feel defeated. We have to keep showing up. Keep calling your representatives. Keep participating in town halls. Keep marching in the streets. Keep talking to your neighbors and sharing your stories. It’s more important than you know.
3 pieces of good news:
1. The Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration can’t resume deportations under the Alien Enemies Act. This is a big loss for Trump, who has been itching to restart his illegal mass deportations. It isn’t the end of the fight, but it’s still a big deal (and – an added bonus – Trump is furious about the decision)!
2. The Republican majority in the House still can’t get to yes on Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” to gut Medicaid. The Budget Committee met this week and was supposed to advance the massive reconciliation bill that calls for millions of dollars of cuts to Medicaid in order to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires. But right now, the Republican majority has too many defectors. They’re forcing Members back in at 10pm tonight to try again — but for now, the resistance is holding!
3. A U.S. District Court judge blocked the Trump Administration’s mass layoffs of the federal workforce! The judge sided with unions and advocacy groups that Trump has to seek Congress’s approval to broadly restructure the federal workforce.
Keep fighting, stay positive (as much as you can!), and have a good week!
Warmly,
Sara
