John, a deadly tornado swept through rural, eastern Kentucky this weekend, taking at least 27 lives and leaving nearly 50 miles of destruction in its wake.
Save the Children is rushing to provide critical supplies and support to help children and families hardest hit by the powerful storm. This includes hygiene kits, diapers and cash assistance to support families’ most urgent needs.
Thousands of children and their families are now facing fear and uncertainty in the aftermath of this disaster. Even before this tornado outbreak, families in Kentucky have had an extraordinarily difficult time in recent months. More than 40 wildfires have been raging across the commonwealth, and the winter and spring have seen a series of intense storms that caused major damage and flooding.
Save the Children has also been working in Kentucky rural communities since 1932, providing support to children and families most impacted by poverty. Today, this includes leading high-quality early education programs in some of the state’s most impoverished rural communities, to help children succeed in school and life.
As a national leader in protecting children in emergencies, Save the Children has been supporting children’s most critical needs in U.S. emergencies since 2005. Our Children’s Emergency Fund means we can act as soon as a crisis hits, and deliver life-saving support wherever it is needed, when it matters most.
