John, a recent federal court decision against Alabama’s efforts to impose an unfair congressional map is an undeniable win for the fair maps movement. And it sends a clear message to anti-democracy extremists: You will not succeed in taking this nation backwards.

The court reaffirmed that Alabama’s congressional map must have two Black opportunity districts, and ensures Black voters in Alabama will vote under a fair map for the rest of the decade. It helps to put that into perspective:

“The generations of Black Alabamians who fought to achieve equal representation had their sacrifice and commitment recognized…Because of their tenacity and hard work, Black Alabamians will continue to vote on a fair congressional map that gives them their legally mandated voting power and allows them to elect a candidate of their choice in two districts.”
—Eric H. Holder, Jr.
82nd Attorney General of the United States

The fair maps movement played a crucial role in securing a landmark victory on behalf of Black voters in Allen v. Milligan in front of the Supreme Court, and this trial court ruling reaffirms it. But we must remember that Republicans are launching efforts that threaten the fundamental right to vote in states across the country. They’ve shown us they’ll stop at nothing in the pursuit of power, even silencing voters. In A.G. Holder’s words:

“The relentless efforts of some in Alabama to deny Black state citizens the rights they deserve and force them to vote on a racially discriminatory map are truly shameful.”

The NDRC is fighting back against attempts to erode our democracy’s most basic functions, and we depend on grassroots support to drive that work forward.
