Our resistance has power. After we pushed in Congress, on the streets, and in the courts, more than 1,000 student visas have been reinstated and some detained students have been released—including Rumeysa Ozturk, Dr. Badar Khan Suri, and Mohsen Mahdawi.

I will keep pushing to free them all and to defend our constitutional rights to free speech and due process.

Upon his release, Mohsen told Trump, “I’m not afraid of you.” These victories for our movements and our rights show that our pressure is working and we cannot back down.

Every week, I have been resisting and exposing the truth about how Trump is abusing his power. Using the power of the letterhead, introducing and cosponsoring bills, joining amicus briefs, and using all the tools available to us to fight back against Trump’s illegal abuses of power.

During Trump’s first term, I led the movement to impeach him—twice. I will continue to be one of the loudest voices in Congress resisting Trump’s agenda. Please read on to learn more about how I’m resisting.

Here are some ways I’m fighting back against Trump and Musk in Congress:

• I led the Congressional Mamas’ Caucus and 23 of my colleagues in sending a letter to Trump demanding that his administration immediately restore all Head Start funding. After sending our letter, we saw immediate improvements to help Head Start centers access their funding. But Trump continues to threaten this vital early education program, so I led another letter demanding answers from the Department of Health and Human Services about the proposed closure of some Head Start offices.

• In the Financial Services Committee, I introduced an amendment to prevent any budget that cuts programs for working families and the poor to pay for billionaire tax breaks.

• In the House Oversight Committee, I motioned to subpoena Elon Musk to testify before Congress and explain why a billionaire that nobody voted for is apparently in charge of our government.

• I’m demanding Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stop separating families, secretly detaining people, and using CBP facilities for long-term detention. I visited a local CBP detention facility where hundreds of people have been detained in the past few months, simply for making a wrong turn on the Ambassador Bridge from Detroit into Canada.

• I’m pushing my colleagues to defend vital services like Medicaid and SNAP, including Republican Congressman John James who represents a neighboring district. We only need a few Republicans to vote against cuts, so my team and I have called and sent postcards to James’ constituents to push him on this. He refuses to hold town halls, so I accepted his constituents’ invitation to join a community town hall where I helped answer questions from 300 residents.

• I reintroduced legislation to expand civil rights protections for marginalized communities and to help unhoused young people with direct cash assistance.

• After the Trump administration proposed gutting the office that upholds our fair housing laws, I questioned the Acting Inspector General for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and called on him to move with urgency in investigating this administration.

• I’m supporting legislation to protect immigrants’ right to counsel, to revoke the Alien Enemies Act which Trump wants to use to deport and detain U.S. citizens, to block cuts to Medicaid and food assistance, and more.

• I’ve joined my colleagues in signing onto letters demanding DHS stop the transfer of U.S. residents to the notorious CECOT prison camp in El Salvador, calling on FEMA to resume funding for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, urging the DHS Inspector General to investigate systemic abuse and due process violations, defending consumer protections, condemning Trump’s corrupt market manipulation and insider trading, opposing the closure of Social Security Administration field offices and threats to Meals on Wheels, urging protections for national parks, opposing attacks on transgender Americans, and demanding the Department of Education continue programs that support English learners and also rescind its threat to defund schools with DEI programs.

• As a proud Arab American Congresswoman representing one of the largest Arab American communities in our country, I reintroduced a resolution to recognize April as Arab American Heritage Month and uplift the culture, history, and contributions of Arab Americans. Our stories matter, now more than ever: They cannot erase us.

• I introduced Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block billions in Trump’s planned weapons transfers to the Israeli military. I also reintroduced historic legislation to recognize the ongoing Nakba against Palestinians.

• My team and I are training progressives who want to run for office and supporting young people who want to be involved in their communities. We’re also holding Know Your Rights workshops and trainings on union organizing.

We can’t give into cynicism. Our communities are hurting, but we are not backing down.
