THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Recognizing Service and Sacrifice
Armed Forces Day, celebrated on the third Saturday of May, is a time to honor all who serve in the US military—past and present. This special day recognizes the dedication and sacrifice of our service members across all branches.
In July 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act<[link removed]>, unifying the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard under the Department of Defense. Before this, each branch held separate observance days. In 1949, the Secretary of Defense announced<[link removed]> Armed Forces Day to consolidate these celebrations.
On May 20, 1950, President Truman proclaimed<[link removed]> the first Armed Forces Day: “It is fitting and proper that we devote one day each year to paying tribute to the Armed Forces as the servants and protectors of our nation.”
That inaugural celebration<[link removed]> featured parades in cities across the US and in Berlin, where American troops were stationed. Since then, Armed Forces Day has been marked by ceremonies<[link removed]{"facets"%3A{"accodenav"%3A%5B"STATUTE"%2C"CPD"%2C"FR"%2C"PPP"%5D}%2C"filterOrder"%3A%5B"accodenav"%5D%2C"facetToExpand"%3A"accodenav"%2C"offset"%3A0%2C"pageSize"%3A"10"%2C"sortBy"%3A"1"%2C"query"%3A"title%3A%5C"armed forces day%5C""%2C"historical"%3Afalse}?R6wF9AvbqY=9DDE36D7DCEFC38769A1E54F356A5E5A>, speeches<[link removed]{"facets"%3A{"accodenav"%3A%5B"CREC"%2C"CRECB"%5D}%2C"filterOrder"%3A%5B"accodenav"%5D%2C"facetToExpand"%3A"accodenav"%2C"offset"%3A0%2C"pageSize"%3A"10"%2C"sortBy"%3A"2"%2C"query"%3A"title%3A%5C"armed forces day%5C""%2C"historical"%3Afalse}?R6wF9AvbqY=9DDE36D7DCEFC38769A1E54F356A5E5A>, and community events<[link removed]> honoring our military’s service.
