Instead of a $24 billion Metrorail megaproject, WMATA recently announced that it would focus on upgrading its rail system to be faster, more frequent, and cheaper to operate. Billed as a pivot to building “World Class Transit” in the nation’s capital, the proposal would fully automate Metrorail’s trains. MARC and VRE should take note.

Bikeshare Beat: Ridership spiked in April, while Columbia Road trips soar

CaBi has now recorded 40 consecutive months of year-over-year monthly ridership growth. A spotlight on new bike lane data shows that some of that growth is thanks to infrastructure: through April 2025, the five stations along Columbia Road NW recorded a 26.3% increase in CaBi ridership compared to the same period in 2024, before the protected bike lanes were added. Bonus fact: is this a first? Just Married by CaBi! (Ed note: the original version of this story suggested a 49% increase in ridership along Columbia Rd since the bike lanes were added. We’ve corrected the error).

The H St NE bus lanes are supposed to deliver safety and transit efficiency. If the Mayor cancels them now, it could represent a concerning pattern of killing long-term projects that communities and her own administration have invested in for several years.
