The United States Postal Service (USPS) isn't just a convenience — it's a
constitutional promise,
John.
And right now, that promise is under threat by the Trump administration.
Unsurprisingly, the administration signaled a potential step toward
privatizing the USPS with its selection of a FedEx board member to serve
as its new postmaster general.
If Trump gets his way, Americans everywhere could lose out on a lot.
In particular, rural Americans are at risk of being cut off from the
USPS’s services.
Private mail carriers like UPS, Amazon, and FedEx charge “remote
surcharges” to nearly 10% of all U.S. zip codes — home to more than 4
million Americans — because they live in distant areas.
Plans to privatize the USPS aren’t new or about efficiency. They’re about
dismantling public services so the far-right can prove government doesn’t
work.

New polling shows just how controversial plans to privatize the postal
service really are. Nearly 60% of respondents opposed privatizing USPS.
This unified opposition cuts across political, geographic, and demographic
lines, with respondents in all regions of the country saying they wanted
to maintain the USPS as a public service by a margin of at least 29
points.
It’s even more telling that 58% of rural voters who supported Donald Trump
in 2024 said they were opposed to privatizing the postal service.
And it makes sense,
John. Rural voters would be
among the hardest hit groups of people to be impacted should these
privatization plans see the light of day.
But just because privatizing the USPS is uniformly unpopular, that doesn’t
mean MAGA Republicans won’t try to do it.
As we’ve seen in the last four months, Trump and his MAGA movement aren’t
operating based on the popularity of their ideas — their endgame is to
further entrench their power and that of their billionaire cronies at all
of our expense.
That’s why it’s critical we use our voices to make it loud and clear that
we won’t accept this.
