Today is the International Day of Families, a day to celebrate families in all their forms and recognize the transformative power of establishing gender equality in this fundamental unit of society.

As a global human rights organization and convener of local, national, and global coalitions, Equality Now helps reform discriminatory family laws that do not ensure equality between husbands and wives, or brothers and sisters, or deny mothers and sisters rights in favor of male relatives. What are family laws?

Family laws govern issues such as marriage, divorce, widowhood, parental, and economic rights (including inheritance and property rights). When these laws are sex-discriminatory, they place women as second-class citizens within their own families and undermine gender equality in society, harming everyone. This has a profound negative impact on women’s agency, opportunities, and safety. It is the first site of inequality.
The World Bank recently reported that since the 1970’s, 600 million women have gained access to economic opportunities because of reformed or repealed sex-discriminatory family laws. Studies also show that equality in the family can lead to higher educational attainment and economic participation, better health, stronger political empowerment for women and girls, and better outcomes for all children in the family. In short, equality in the family has a powerful ripple effect, not only creating a better world for women and girls, but for everyone.
