Sign up for our General Meeting with Guest Speaker Public Defender Mano Raju
------------------------------------------------------------
This Sunday is our monthly General Meeting at 518 Valencia at 2 PM. We will hear from our guest speaker, Public Defender Mano Raju, who will tell us about the parallels of fighting fascism federally, and keeping up our progressive values locally. Space is limited, so RSVP on Eventbrite ([link removed]) !

Medicaid Cuts, Budget Reconciliation, and what YOU can do.
------------------------------------------------------------
It’s the time of budget reconciliation, when Congress decides how to allocate our hard-earned money into programs and services. Well, that’s usually the case, but as you may have heard from Indivisible National, their current objective is to slash Medicaid and other critical services while giving money to DOGE and cutting taxes for the rich.

We are following Indivisible’s call to do everything we can to halt this terrible budget, which will have disastrous consequences for the nation’s poor. Below are some things you can do now.

**
Tell Congress: Defund DOGE thieves in the budget reconciliation bill!
------------------------------------------------------------
Early in the Trump Administration, he corrupted the US Digital Service by replacing it with a fake department called the “Department of Government Efficiency,” headed by billionaire Elon Musk, and tasking DOGE with stealing our data and destroying our government from the inside.

They have snatched personal data about residents of the United States from dozens of federal databases, including databases managed by Social Security, the IRS, and the Department of Health and Human Services (the Department that oversees Medicare and Medicaid), and are combining it all into one big database at the Department of Homeland Security—exactly as privacy advocates warned about back when DHS was first created.

In the current lawsuits against DOGE, they’ve been evasive about what happens with data that DOGE thieves have already stolen. And even if you fully trust Trump’s Department of Homeland Security to use this terrifying list responsibly, any database like this can be stolen—especially when it’s already been cracked open by intruders like the thieves from DOGE.

Tell your Members of Congress: ([link removed]) Use your power of the purse to bust the DOGE data-theft ring once and for all.

**
Tell voters in red states: Pressure YOUR Congressmembers to vote NO on the budget.
------------------------------------------------------------
With Indivisible National and the California Democratic Party, phone bank to red states with vulnerable electeds, and tell them to vote NO on Medicaid cuts:
* Phone Bank to California CD 22 (Rep. Valadao’s district): RSVP on Mobilize ([link removed])
* Phone Bank to California CD 40 (Rep. Kim’s district): RSVP on Mobilize ([link removed])
* Phone Bank to North Carolina (Sen. Thom Tillis’s state): RSVP on Mobilize ([link removed])

Learn What Congressional Democrats Should Be Doing
------------------------------------------------------------
When Democrats are in the majority, Republicans use hardball tactics to oppose, resist, delay, and derail legislation that favors We the People over mega-corporations and billionaires. But when Republicans control Congress, Democrats seem strangely reluctant to do as was done unto them to defend democracy and oppose racism, white nationalism, misogyny, bigotry, and greed. They say there is nothing they can do to stop or slow the MAGA regime's legislative juggernaut, so nothing is just what they do.

They need to do their job. They need to represent us!

Here are some things they can do if they find the gumption:

1. Filibuster to block passage of bills.
2. Filibuster to Obstruct.
3. Quorum Call and roll call.
4. Maximize debate.
5. Deny Unanimous Consent.
6. Amendments to Legislation
7. Delay business with Committee Rules…

…and so much more. To read more on the hardball tactics we want our MoCs to use, read more on our blog ([link removed]) .

** Tell SF Rec and Park and your supervisor to reject artificial turf
------------------------------------------------------------
Join other concerned park goers in shaping the plan that San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department is developing for Crocker Amazon Park. The plan ([link removed]) , as presented on February 20th, would eliminate the two existing open fields, add an additional baseball field, and cover more than half of the park with artificial turf.

With the existing soccer field, this would mean that over three-quarters of the park would be covered in artificial surfaces, significantly altering the park’s character—not for the better. The proposed plan does not add any new amenities for nearby residents. They aren’t even planning to give the small Rec Center a fresh coat of paint! However, they are proposing a small dog park.

Artificial turf is made of plastic—it is harmful and toxic to both people and the environment and not necessarily more cost effective in the long run ([link removed]) .

Before the next meeting, there is an opportunity to organize and formally register our opposition. It’s most effective if we ask for specific changes to which the RPD must respond. Below, we have outlined what we believe to be key priorities. Please feel free to use any of these points in your own message and add anything else that matters to you.

Email the Rec and Park Commission and (if you live in District 11) call Supervisor Chen and tell them: No plastic in Crocker Amazon Park! ([link removed])

** Tell Senator Wiener: Protect Our Power; Stop SB 540!
------------------------------------------------------------
Currently, California has its own electrical system operator (CAISO), managing our grid separately from other states, which means we have total control over where our electricity comes from. We control how much is from renewable sources like solar and wind, how much is from nuclear, and how much is from fossil fuels like methane (aka “natural gas”). We decide how much we invest in storage technologies like batteries and hydroelectric. And all of our energy stays right here in California.

Governor Newsom and the electric utilities want to give up California’s control and add more fossil fuels, possibly including coal, used in other states. They’d do this by joining a compact along with other western states—which ones would be TBD. Once we connect to even a single other state, that’s interstate commerce, which puts us under the jurisdiction of Trump’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

Tell Senator Wiener: Keep Trump and fossil fuels out of our electrical system. Protect CAISO and our commitments to renewable energy. Stop SB 540. ([link removed])

Keep pushing for a People’s Budget: Ask Mayor Lurie and your Supervisors to prioritize the people and tax Airbnb!
------------------------------------------------------------
A budget is a moral document and an expression of values. We know that all people, no matter where they live, what they look like, or who they love, deserve safety and well-being.

Our city’s next budget is currently being crafted. But contrary to our values, our communities are on the chopping block. Year after year, we see more and more cuts to needed services while the budget for the police gets more and more bloated—especially with massive overtime spending ([link removed]) . The Board of Supervisors published an audit of police overtime ([link removed]) last year, but they have yet to take action.

We are still fighting for a People’s Budget. Our Local and State Action Team began reaching out to collaborate with others to fight for our values right here in San Francisco. We learned about The People’s Budget Coalition ([link removed]) , a part of SF Rising ([link removed]) . We continue to meet with Anya Worley-Ziegmann and the People’s Budget Coalition who convenes 150 non profit organizations, unions and advocates who work to democratize the city budget to make sure every voice is heard. ISF stands with them in building lasting change and political power for working class people of color in San Francisco.

Here’s what you can do.
* Call the Mayor and your Supervisor to make sure they know what we stand for. We want a city where our budget protects the freedom and future thriving of all our people and families.
* Email the Board of Supervisors to oppose $90 million of additional police overtime.
* Email Airbnb, who is refusing to be a good neighbor and pay what they owe in taxes.
* Join the People’s Budget Rally on Tuesday, June 12 at 12 PM on the stairs of City Hall.
