Allegheny County could adopt a new type of involuntary mental health treatment, supplementing forced hospitalization with a civil process to require treatment in the community.

The process, assisted outpatient treatment, has attracted fierce advocates and critics. The county informed the state it would implement it by Sept. 1, though a county official told PublicSource it hasn’t made a final decision yet.
