Part of being a mom is worrying about your kids, and with everything we’re
seeing from Donald Trump and the attacks on our democracy and our rights,
many parents have asked me how to navigate.
I first ran for office in 2018 because I couldn’t sit on the sidelines
while Trump attacked families like mine. I had never run for office
before, and I knew running in a district where the Republican incumbent
had won by double digits just a few years back meant it would be time
   consuming and challenging.
Because my kids were young, and because I’m a single mom, I had to involve
my kids, explaining why I was running and what it would demand. They were
part of my campaign life—because they are the most important thing in my
life. Each child gave my introduction speech on election night over the
years, and while they may bicker about who did the best job, I think these
are the best political speeches ever given. And they’re among my most
   treasured memories.
This Mother’s Day I wanted to share some highlights with you, [ [link removed] ]you can
   watch here.
It’s true, my kids have had to grapple with politics and policy, and a mom
who had to juggle both. But that experience has helped make them the
amazing young people they are. That gives my Mother’s Day an extra special
   meaning.
