The past two weeks, people across the world have risen up against racism, united in their call for protecting, uplifting and supporting Black lives. We’re seeing a massive shift in thought and perspective -- one that has the potential to create lasting change.

Now, it is on every single person, elected official and organization to deeply reflect on their work and what we can all do to make the changes needed to ensure Black lives matter each and every day. It’s not enough to say that you stand in support of this movement -- we have to act.

Right now, there are only two Black women under 40 in Congress and Black women are underrepresented at every level of government. And we won’t be able to make the bold changes necessary to address systemic racism unless we change who holds the power.

HER Time was created to do just that. Now more than ever, we recommit ourselves to fighting to ensure that the people’s government actually reflects the people.

Looking back on my time as a candidate, it’s now easy to see how I had access to money -- and people with money -- because of my inherent advantage and privilege as a white person. In fact, a study of the 2018 midterms found that, regardless of the type of election, Black women raised the least amount of money and that among female candidates, Black women raised half as much as white candidates.

Far too often, Black women are counted out in politics for this very reason, and what we’re left with is more wealthy, white men in power. This has to change. Now.

It’s time to invest in Black women who are running for office.

That’s why today, we are asking you to support Candace Valenzuela, HER Time endorsed candidate running for Congress in Texas, who has a runoff coming up on July 14. And soon, we will be announcing another slate of endorsed candidates -- we are alway looking for opportunities to support Black women running for federal office, so if you know someone, please nominate them!

We hope you will continue to stand with us in our work to shift who holds the power in this country. It’s about time.

Thank you,

Katie Hill and the entire team at HER Time
