John, you probably know me as an actor, an activist, and yes, the woman in leg warmers from those workout tapes. But there’s a deeper story behind all that sweat. And it’s one I carry with me every day.

Back in the late ’70s, my then-husband, Tom Hayden, and I had founded the California Campaign for Economic Democracy — an effort to organize around housing, workers’ rights, environmental justice, and so much more. We were determined to make a real difference, but we needed a way to raise money that wasn’t dependent on big donors or corporate interests.

I realized the only other business I really understood besides acting was exercise. So I took that knowledge — along with a whole lot of conviction — and launched the Jane Fonda Workout. I had no idea it would sell millions of copies. I definitely didn’t expect it to become the top-selling VHS tape in the country.

But it did. And every penny of profit went straight into the movement.

Those tapes helped fund the fight against toxic chemical dumps in California. They helped push for protective environmental policies and to support liberal candidates who were ready to take on the big issues. And now, more than 40 years later, that legacy continues, just in a different form.

This month, we’re celebrating the 43rd anniversary of my very first workout tape. To mark the occasion, I’ve signed a handful of memorabilia from those early days — VHS tapes, a vinyl, and a few surprises from my vault — and we’re giving supporters like you the chance to take one home.
