Critical Protections Won for the African Penguin A hard-won settlement will bring relief to Africa’s only penguin species, which is facing imminent extinction. Our partner in South Africa, Biodiversity Law Centre, reached an agreement that closes the area around the penguins’ colonies to commercial fishing for 10 years. Earthjustice supported Biodiversity Law Centre with expert analysis and legal research. The African penguin, which is Africa’s only penguin species, has already lost 97% of its population and continues to decline at rates of 8% per year. If trends persist, the African penguin would likely be extinct in the wild by 2035 — a mere generation of penguins away. Food scarcity caused by nearby commercial fisheries is the main driver of penguin declines, so winning negotiated fishing closures through 2035 is a big win for these little penguins.   Over 100,000 Supporters Take Action in Trump's First 100 Days Since Trump took office, Earthjustice supporters have joined us in defending policies that aim to build lasting environmental protections. We cannot let this new administration erase the progress we have achieved together. Your advocacy is more important than ever.   Protecting the Gulf of Mexico from Offshore Drilling A federal court ruled that the government broke the law two years ago when it irresponsibly put 73 million acres of the Gulf of Mexico up for auction to oil and gas companies. Oil and gas drilling in the Gulf spikes climate emissions and threatens already-overburdened communities living near oil refineries and other polluting infrastructure. It also imperils many kinds of marine life. In this case, Earthjustice sued the government for failing to adequately consider how the lease sale would harm the critically endangered Gulf of Mexico Rice’s whale and drive climate change, and voiced concerns regarding environmental justice impacts on gulf communities. We are continuing to fight the government’s attempts to sell our oceans to the oil and gas industry. This February, we filed the first major environmental lawsuit against the second Trump administration, challenging President Trump’s executive order to revoke protections from millions of acres of undeveloped public waters, including in the Gulf of Mexico.   Feature Story: 100 Days of Trump’s Attacks We discuss where the Trump administration is going and where we stand. Read the article.   No Shortcuts for Waste Pits in San Jacinto A controversial project that could stir up toxic contamination from a Texas Superfund site will get more oversight from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The project aims to construct a barge facility in the San Jacinto River, but dredging and increased barge traffic threaten to disturb the toxic paper mill waste that was dumped there in the 1960s. On behalf of Texas Health and Environmental Alliance, Earthjustice challenged the operation’s permits, which the Army Corps had granted without public input or environmental scrutiny. Now the Army Corps has revoked the permit and agreed it must conduct a full environmental review before approving future permits for the project. The state health department has recently found that the area around the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund Site has cancer rates significantly greater than the average in Texas. This agreement with the Army Corps sends a clear message that communities cannot be sidelined.   Clean Energy and Lower Energy Bills in Maryland Maryland legislators passed several laws that will bring down energy costs for Marylanders and secure the state’s clean energy future.
