Radio Nkuli Makeli, Indigenous Community Media Grant Partner (Bakola-Bagyelis), Cameroon

Indigenous Community Media Grant Partner Spotlight: Amplifying Indigenous Voices in Cameroon ([link removed])

Cultural Survival’s Indigenous Community Media Fund ([link removed]) uplifts Indigenous radio stations like Radio Nkuli Makeli in southern Cameroon to share their stories, advocate for their rights, and ensure their self-determination. Thanks to your support, this community-led station has strengthened its technical infrastructure, trained Indigenous journalists, and launched programs to defend land rights and strengthen cultural identity.

Radio Nkuli Makeli serves as a vital lifeline for Indigenous Bagyeli and Bakola communities facing threats from deforestation, land grabbing, and industrial development. Broadcasting in Bagyeli and Bakola languages, their programs focus on critical issues including land rights, environmental protection, access to education and healthcare, and revitalization of traditional culture.

“Before, radio and social networks [did not exist] for us. Now, it's different. I can gather information, cross-check it, and publish it. I know what to do and where to go if my land rights are infringed." – Manzoul Anne (Bagyeli)

Radio Nkuli Makeli's Indigenous Community Media Fund grant enabled the radio station to strengthen its technical capacity, train staff in radio production and digital media skills, and expand its outreach through a Facebook page. The grant also supported the creation of radio programs specifically focused on land rights and natural resource management.

Through these efforts, the radio station has increased awareness of Indigenous rights among the Bagyeli and Bakola communities and fostered a sense of collective identity and empowerment. Community members have also gained valuable media production and advocacy skills, enabling them to communicate their concerns and participate in local decision-making processes.

Their success highlights the power of community media and its role in strengthening community, building technical skills, and amplifying Indigenous voices — further proving that when Indigenous communities control their own media, they can protect their lands, cultures, and futures.
