I’m speaking up and I’m standing in the gap

Ayanna Pressley for Congress

Hello, yesterday I asked Trump’s Treasury Secretary a simple question: “Yes or no, do you support an exemption to tariffs on items that parents need to care for their babies?”

I was referring to car seats — which Trump doesn’t even have in his vocabulary. Car seats are the law of the land in all 50 states but now, the cost of car seats is going up with Trump’s 145% tariffs on Chinese imported products. Approximately, 9 out of every 10 car seats in the U.S. come from China. That’s a steep cost, and a steep cost hike for families all over the country.

After a long back-and-forth, here’s the response I got from Secretary Bessent: “It is under consideration.” Seriously?

I asked this question on behalf of families across the country who are concerned about the Trump administration’s reckless and chaotic tariff policy. I’m pushing for an exemption to tariffs on baby products for all the families across the country who will otherwise see the costs of essential baby products skyrocket. And it’s not just the car seats that are impacted. We're talking about strollers, cribs, high chairs, you name it.

While I didn’t get the direct answer I was looking for, Trump is now considering the exemption for tariffs on baby products that I’ve been advocating for. It’s my duty to fight for the people — especially the people closest to the hurt and harm of this administration’s actions. Will you help me build strong, grassroots opposition against these tariffs? Please, if you can, chip in $25 or any amount you can to fuel our fight against Trump’s policies.

Republicans claim they are pro-family. But I can’t hear the words they say because I see the things they do: cut Medicaid, cut food assistance, cut funding for public education , and impose tariffs that hurt families and small businesses. The cruelty is the point.

Rather than delivering stability for our country, this Trump tariff tantrum has been inconsistent, counterproductive, and disconnected from reality.

I’m fighting for families and everyone who calls this country home. I’m in Congress, fighting this harmful legislation and making Republicans wear it. I’m in my district, listening to the community’s concerns and standing in the gap.

And here, right now, I need your help to stop the Trump administration from tanking our economy. Can you pitch in $25 or whatever amount makes most sense to you, to help us fight for families and everyone hurting from Trump’s policies?
