As Mother's Day approaches, many of us are selecting thoughtful gifts, planning special meals, and writing heartfelt cards to celebrate the women and motherly figures who have raised us.

But for mothers in crisis zones around the world, Mother's Day won't bring celebration—only another day in their dire struggle to protect their families.

I am in awe of these mothers' courage and resilience, as they shield their children from violence, search tirelessly for food amid scarcity, and somehow find strength while living through the most extreme situations.

Today, I'm asking you to extend your compassion to these extraordinary women who are doing everything possible to protect their children and hold their families together under impossible circumstances.

In Gaza, more than 1.8 million people are already food insecure and with medical supplies in short supply, people face the risk of hunger, malnutrition and preventable diseases.

Many mothers are too malnourished to breastfeed their babies, leaving them to rely on unsafe alternatives that increase the risk of pneumonia and other illnesses.

We must do more to help mothers, children and families in Gaza and in crisis zones around the world.
