I’ve been doing this work long enough to know that progress doesn’t come easy. But sometimes, even now, I’m stunned by how deep the fossil fuel industry’s grip still runs in our government.

John, last week, 35 House Democrats joined Republicans and voted to repeal California’s landmark policy to phase out gas-powered cars by 2035. A policy that 11 other states had already adopted. A policy that would have drastically cut pollution and helped protect the health of our communities, especially those hit hardest by the climate crisis.

Those Democrats caved. And they gave Trump exactly what he wanted. This is the kind of vote that makes your head spin. If you’re furious too, will you chip in to help us elect real climate champions who won’t cower to Big Oil and their lobbyists? [[link removed]]

One of those 35 votes came from none other than Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar. You may recognize him as the anti-choice, Oily Democrat who’s in bed with the fossil fuel industry — and helped strip a provision from the Build Back Better plan that would have ended fossil fuel subsidies. He nearly lost his seat in 2022 to a young Latina climate champion named Jessica Cisneros.

We endorsed Jessica. She lost by just 281 votes.

And it’s moments like this, when bought-and-paid for Democrats stand shoulder to shoulder with Big Oil and hand them another win, that remind me why we launched JanePAC in the first place.

Because we can’t just fight Republicans. We have to fight for better Democrats. The kind who don’t take fossil fuel money or betray their own state’s climate leadership, and who show up when it matters most, not just when it’s politically convenient.

That’s why we get involved in primaries. Because if we want bold climate action, we need bold climate champions in Congress. Period.
