Dear John,
Donald Trump’s authoritarian rampage is pushing our democracy to the brink, and one of the only effective checks on his power has been the federal courts.
Now Republicans in Congress are trying to remove even that one last roadblock standing in Trump’s way.
Last month, the House Republicans passed the No Rogue Rulings Act, which would bar federal district judges from issuing nationwide injunctions to block Trump’s illegal executive actions. Then this week, a key House committee passed the JUDGES Act, a bill that would allow Trump to pack the courts with MAGA loyalists by adding 66 new judgeships nationwide.
These bills are an all-out attack on the separation of powers that form the basis of our constitution.
Inequality Media Civic Action is alerting the public and mobilizing grassroots support so we can stop these bills from becoming law. But with Republicans in control of both houses of Congress, this fight won’t be easy, and we’re counting on grassroots supporters like you to help power our work.
Will you make a monthly donation to help educate the public, defend democracy, and stop the JUDGES Act and the No Rogue Rulings Act?
The JUDGES Act and the No Rogue Rulings Act are a double-barreled assault on the independent judiciary as a meaningful check on Trump’s power. If Republicans are able to pass them into law, then there will be almost nothing left to stop Trump’s most cruel, corrupt, and lawless abuses of power.
The thought makes me truly afraid for the fate of our democracy.
This is a president who has weaponized the full power of the federal government to intimidate and bully law firms, universities, and members of the free press who dare to challenge him.
This is a man who is openly soliciting bribes and selling access to enrich himself and his family at a scale we haven’t seen since at least the Gilded Age.
This is an administration that has deported U.S. citizens, including a 4-year-old child with cancer; jailed student visa holders and legal permanent residents for the “crime” of expressing a political opinion; and shipped hundreds of people to a notorious mega-prison in El Salvador with no due process.
And we must never, ever forget that this is a president who instigated a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn a free and fair election.
Inequality Media Civic Action is fighting against Trump’s authoritarian attacks on the judiciary, and as a grassroots-funded organization, we rely on your donations to power everything we do.
So I'm asking you today: Will you make a monthly donation to help educate the public, get the truth out, and defend the independent judiciary as a check on Trump’s power?
Thank you,
Robert Reich
