John, In 2012, while Hurricane Sandy was decimating New Jersey, I spent one evening driving around looking for people who needed help.

Suddenly, in the dark of night, I saw a light coming through the top of the hill, swinging back and forth. As I got closer, I saw that the light was being held up by an elderly man who was standing in front of a bunch of trees.

I yelled, “Why are you out here?” and he looked at me like I was the stupidest man in America.

He pointed over at the shattered wood and twisted wires, and said “It’s dangerous — I’m standing out here to make sure no one comes along and gets hurt.”

I had just spoken to President Obama about Newark’s devastation from the storm. I had recently gotten off the phone with the Governor of New Jersey.

But I’ve never forgotten that in the worst storm to hit my city and my state in a century, the most profound response I saw was not from a man with a title or position — but a man who stood at the top of that hill in a savage storm, in the dark of night, to hold up a light so that other people wouldn’t get hurt.

We are in a moral moment. What we need now are people who are willing to stand in this moral storm.

So I’m asking – will you stand up and hold up your light? Will you stand up and demand justice? Will you stand up and call for the conscience of your countrymen and women? Will you stand up and say not on my watch will this administration tear down Medicaid? Will you stand up and say not on my watch will they hurt our children?
