The following message is from Mirce Alva Lopez [[link removed]] , who was separated from her child when she arrived in the United States. They were reunited in 2018.after four months apart.
Friend,
I came [to the United States] because I had nowhere to live and I wanted to give my son a better future.
But [when I arrived] I was detained at the border for about four and a half months and I was separated from him.
I don't have words to describe the moment my son was taken from me or for how I felt my heart shatter. I was not used to being apart from my son and knowing that I was going to be separated from my son was painful, a tremendous hurt that I am just now overcoming. But we're together now and I know we will get ahead.
Today, my greatest wish is that he continues to study. We are grateful for the opportunity to be in this country. There is a future for him here, to continue studying. He tells me: "Mommy I would like to be a doctor." or "I would like to drive a bus like the ones that take children to school." I feel so happy that he has this mentality, that he has a goal in his heart. This makes me know that everything is possible, that he has dreams and that we have to support them.
To all the mothers celebrating out there this Mother's Day, I would give them some advice . That when bad things happens, we need to keep fighting until until they give us our children and not rest.
We must ask and ask until we get an answer.
We must fight for all of our children. Because that is the only choice we have as mothers.
