WI High School Softball Player Cleared to Play After WILL's Support

After being deemed ineligible to play on her varsity softball team, WILL secured a waiver for our client, Macy Weigel, from the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA).

The WIAA initially determined Macy was ineligible to play varsity sports for one year due to their “transfer rule” and denied her waiver application. WILL sued in court, and helped Macy and her family fight back, arguing that the WIAA violated its own rules in denying Macy’s waiver request. This week, the WIAA finally granted Macy’s waiver request and is allowing her to play.

WILL Client, Macy Weigel, stated, “I just want to be on the field with my friends, and I am so grateful to have this opportunity.”

WILL Calls for Trump Administration to Investigate Racially Exclusive Librarians Event

WILL is calling on the Trump Administration to investigate a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) librarians conference organized by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and funded by Wisconsin taxpayers.

This event comes on the heels of DPI refusing to comply with the Department of Education’s directive to certify racial equality in education—a condition for receiving federal education funds.

Hosting an event for certain racial groups is not only unlawful but further jeopardizes critical federal funding for Wisconsin schools.

WILL Backs Parents After School Holds Secret Gender Identity Talks with Student

WILL, the Liberty Justice Center, and Dr. Erica Anderson, PhD, are supporting two Florida parents who say their local public school kept them in the dark about important conversations with their child regarding gender identity.

The case centers on January and Jeffrey Littlejohn, parents in Leon County, Florida, who allege that school officials met privately with their child about using a new name and pronouns, and did not inform or involve them as parents.

“It’s up to the parents to raise their child, not school staff. When a major decision-point arises—like whether school faculty treat a minor child as the opposite sex—schools must defer to parents. Unfortunately, this school has left these parents in the dark, violating their constitutionally protected rights.”

WILL Testifies in Favor of Increased Government Transparency

WILL Policy Director, Kyle Koenen, last week testified before the State Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety in favor of Senate Bill 194, which would increase government transparency under state open records law.

Currently, Wisconsin's open records law limits the recovery of attorney's fees and court costs only to requesters who win in court. Senate Bill 194 would change this, allowing for such recovery if a government authority voluntarily releases a record after a lawsuit has been filed.
