Last week, I spoke at an MSNBC town hall featuring fired federal workers. When I was asked about the Trump administration’s attempts to cut federal spending, I didn’t hold back:

There’s nobody in the U.S. Senate that cut government as much as I did as the Mayor of Newark. In the middle of the Great Recession, we shrunk the size of Newark’s government by twenty-five percent — but we didn’t do it by executive fiat. We did it with transparency. We brought in experts, and we found ways to create savings for the taxpayers.

What Trump’s DOGE is doing isn’t helping anyone — they’re creating less efficiency, stealing essential government services from Americans, hurting our future by interrupting our NIH funding, interrupting our fights against infectious diseases abroad by the courageous USAID workers who are on the front lines of Ebola and treatment-resistant tuberculosis — and they’re hurting our veterans, because the majority of the workers they’re firing are our veterans who have such a commitment to service. 

While everyday Americans are losing critical services, billionaires are getting richer with more tax breaks. That’s not just a grift and a scam. It’s a lack of accountability. 
We have to be able to make our government better without violating our Constitution or losing accountability.

It’s clear that the Trump administration’s decisions to gut federal agencies and fire federal workers are putting our nation in crisis — and that they will have long-term effects on our future and our health.

But we can make a difference together, John. 

I will never stop calling out Trump’s attempts to scam the American people, but I can’t do it alone.
