The Green Update

Dear John,

Europe is world's the fastest warming continent, with record high temperatures in almost half the continent, according to this year’s Copernicus report.  Over 30% of our rivers exceed the high flood threshold. At least 413,000 people were affected by floods and storms, and over 300 people died due to extreme weather events in Europe last year.

It reminds us that now is not the time to backtrack. We need to invest in prevention and protection against extreme weather events. But even more importantly, we need stronger climate action.

Greens will keep fighting. We will fight in the European Parliament to defend the Green Deal, and we will fight on a national level to promote and protect strong climate legislation. EGP Committee members are travelling all around Europe to work with our member parties to do just that.

We look forward to this year’s COP and what it will bring us. We will not let Trump, or any far-right leader stop us from doing what needs to be done to protect people and planet.

Our co-chairs visited Greenland!

Everyone is talking about Greenland, but the Greens visited to talk *with* Greenland citizens and institutions. To listen to its people and hear their concerns.

Together with Greens/EFA, our co-chairs Vula Tsetsi and Ciaran Cuffe went to witness first-hand the impact of climate change on Greenland and the Greenlanders concerns related to the international context.

Important elections in Finland

Congratulations to our Green friends Vihreät - De Gröna for their strong results in Finland's local elections!

It is a big win for green, progressive forces in Finland and a clear blow for the right-wing government.

The people have said no to austerity policies, and yes to a just transition

Parliamentary Leaders Meeting in Brussels

Green Parliamentary Group Leaders from around Europe came to Brussels on the 25 April for a meeting organised by the Greens/EFA group. The meeting included lunch with President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The representatives from all over Europe gathered to talk about common challenges – from energy transition to the unpredictability of the U.S administration.

Greens stand together, stronger than ever.

Vula Tsetsi at Sumar’s Assembly

Thank you to Sumar for inviting us for their Assembly in Spain.

Our co-chair, Vula Tsetsi met with Minister of Labour, Yolanda Diaz, who knows better than most that strengthening workers’ rights, while defending climate action, is both necessary and possible.  Vula was joined by our committee member Marc Gimenez.

Green Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun from Sumar condemned Orbán’s discriminatory policies and confirmed that Sumar will march with us at Budapest Pride this June.

We met the leadership of Verdes Equo in Madrid to discuss about their climate action and exchanged with the new leadership of Comuns on their important work in Catalonia and on national level in Spain.

🇪🇸🇪🇺 Now more than ever, we are committed to building a more social Europe, together.

The Serbian students on two wheels have arrived in Strasbourg!

After cycling over 1,400 km to bring their call for justice and their fight against corruption straight to the heart of Europe, they’ve finally reached their destination.

🌻 Greens/EFA MEP Gordan Bosanac was proud to welcome these brave young activists and stand with them in their struggle.

Their strength inspires us — and their fight is ours too.

✨ Pride is like glitter, you can never get rid of it.

The Hungarian far right government has amended its constitution to limit LGBTQI+ rights even further.
😡 They have banned Pride events
😡 They will only recognize two sexes (ignoring that gender is different from sex AND ignoring the existence of intersex people)
😡 They will use facial recognition during protests

After introducting the ban, and the recent changes in the constitution people have taken to the streets.  Thousands of protesters have been gathering in Budapest for weeks now, voicing opposition to a new law.

European Greens stands in solidarity with protesters and LGBTQI+ community in Hungary.  That’s why we will be in Budapest on 28 June for Pride, no matter what.

👉 Are you a Green Member of Parliament and you would like to join the March in Budapest with us? Write to [email protected].

Sign our petition for Budapest Pride to go ahead now.

My Voice My Choice needs our help!

After a very successful collection of signatures, the My Voice My Choice campaign is reaching a new phase.

Over the next three months, national authorities will verify the signatures. After that, the initiative will be submitted to the European Commission — triggering an official meeting between the campaign’s organisers and EU decision-makers.

To keep up the momentum, the campaign needs funding for legal support, travel to Brussels, and grassroots action. The goal is to raise €20,000 — every euro brings us all closer to a Europe where everyone has the freedom to choose.

Will you help to make that happen?

As the world’s fastest-warming continent, and given its historical responsibility for climate change, adaptation is no longer optional for Europe. The European State of the Climate report underlines this urgency. Within the green movement, however, the idea of managing climate risk has often been associated with defeatism: Why strive to live with a reality of destruction and inequality instead of changing it? By showcasing stories of transformative change, our independent publication, the Green European Journal, explores climate adaptation from a green perspective – that is, to sketch out the visionary political project that must underlie any credible attempt to “stay with the trouble”.

Europe is not immune to the Trump/Musk playbook. This Thursday, right-wing MEPs are teaming up to attack one of the most successful nature protection laws in the world: the Habitats Directive.

Every day, millions of animals suffer in Europe because our laws aren't strong enough to protect them. Where the European Commission has lacked ambition, we need our Green Members of the European Parliament to push for stronger regulations and make animal welfare a top priority. As the Young European Greens, we are joining 10 animal rights organisations in calling our MEPs to sign the pledge Uncage The Law for more ambitious legislation on breeding, slaughter and labelling regulations. One email can protect billions, will you send it?
