Dear John:

We’re in a moment of darkness–but it’s also a moment of possibility. The inspiring uprising across the country in defense of Black lives and the ways the COVID19 crisis has exposed the inequities and inadequacies in our systems mean we have a chance to build something new from the wreckage.

There’s an old organizing axiom that all organizing is re-organizing. Institutions, communities and power are organized in a way that does not benefit most people – and certainly does not benefit Black people. Our job as organizers is to reorganize communities, society, and power in a way that is more loving, generative, and equitable. This is the ultimate reorganizing moment.

Listen to the first episode of The Next Move

Today, we’re launching The Next Move, a People’s Action podcast about building the future we want in this ultimate moment for reorganizing. Across an eight-episode series, we’re going to talk to the people focused on solutions and action, starting with Maurice Mitchell, the National Director of The Working Families Party and a leader in the Movement for Black Lives.

Listen to the first episode now. If you want to hear an organizing and strategy savant break down the moment we are in and where we go from here, you found it here.

Lots of people are willing to tell us how screwed we are. I want to hear from people who can tell us what we can do to transform our social contract and build something new. I hope these conversations with some of the best progressive organizers out there will give you the lift– the sense of direction and purpose–that they gave me.

In solidarity,

George Goehl

P.S. For each episode, we’re recommending an action you can take to make a difference. This week’s action is to join the Juneteenth actions led by the Movement for Black Lives. After you listen to the first episode, we hope you’ll sign up to participate in defense of Black lives.
