64 years ago this week, Freedom Riders challenged the lack of enforcement of court rulings that declared segregated buses unconstitutional.

Hundreds of brave Freedom Riders endured harassment, violence, and detainment while challenging segregation on buses. Their pivotal actions, despite facing burned buses and brutal attacks, were crucial to the Civil Rights Movement.

Despite the unconstitutionality of segregation on interstate buses, it took many years and many Freedom Rides for rules to finally change, allowing all passengers to sit anywhere and consolidating segregated facilities.

The Freedom Riders formed a critical backbone of the Civil Rights Movement, helped move our country forward a great deal, and inspired participation in future campaigns such as those for voter registration.

Let us today honor the Freedom Riders and consider how each of us can contribute to a more equitable nation for everyone. The Civil Rights Movement taught us a vital lesson: to do nothing in the presence of injustice is to condone and enable it.

Thank you,

Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.
