Dear Community Partner,

In today's always-connected world, consumers can enjoy access to information from a seemingly unlimited number of sources at any time. Along with extensive access to all types of valuable information, consumers are also frequently exposed to a long list of potential harms that can negatively impact their well-being, finances and health. Some of these harms include online fraud, impersonation scams, fake reviews, misinformation campaigns at election time, and media manipulation.

Our upcoming webinar will focus on news literacy and will provide you with tools you can use to help the community you serve avoid some of the potential harms that exist in today's complicated information landscape. As simple as it may sound, knowing the difference between a credible piece of news, a meme, an influencer-created video, or a cleverly concealed marketing campaign or partisan pundit article can go a long way toward consumer protection.

Register now for our "News Literacy for Savvy Consumers" webinar, scheduled for May 7, 2025. Confirmed speakers include Allee Quick, director of community engagement at the News Literacy Project, and Jason Alderman, managing director of communications at SmartNews.

  • How respected information sources from across the political spectrum can be part of the solution to misinformation;
  • Ways that consumers can distinguish news from other types of information, and how to recognize both traditional and nontraditional advertisements;
  • Why professional and ethical standards are necessary to produce quality journalism, and how to apply an understanding of these standards to discern credible information;

  • Resources and tips for community educators and advocates looking to teach news literacy in polarizing times.
