Synthesis is a quick overview of our recent work, amplifying our partners' work, and sharing important environmental stories.
We mourn the sudden and recent death of Senator Bill Ramos (D, LD-5 Issaquah). Washington Conservation Action was proud to endorse Sen. Ramos throughout his political career. Sen. Ramos was a dedicated public servant and understood the complex connections between people and nature. He served with grace and kindness. During his legislative service, he was an active leader on natural resources and the environment, working on some of the state’s most groundbreaking climate and environmental laws.
After 105 days, the 2025 Legislative Session wrapped up on April 27. Because of your advocacy, we made major progress together and successfully advanced the agenda of the Environmental Priorities Coalition! We won by protecting climate funds during a challenging budget year, passed transformational recycling reform, and made information about sewage spills easily accessible to the public. The legislature has done its part to pass important environmental priority bills, the Recycling Reform Act (SB 5284) and the Sewage Spill Right-to-Know Act (HB 1670). Now, it is up to the governor to sign these bills. Send a message to Governor Ferguson urging him to finish the job and sign HB 1670 and SB 5284 into law! [[link removed]]
Governor Bob Ferguson signs HB 1563, the Prescribed Fire Claims Fund bill.
We made more legislative climate progress by passing HB 1409, which strengthens the Clean Fuel Standard by reducing the pollution intensity of transportation fuels. We celebrate the passage of HB 1563, which creates a prescribed fire claims fund to help certified burn managers and cultural fire practitioners improve forest health and protect communities from catastrophic wildfires.
We express immense gratitude to the guests of our annual gala, Cascade: Building Power, Moving Mountains, held on May 2, for making it one to remember. This year, we featured special guests, the Honorable Deb Haaland, former Secretary of the Interior, and Mark Titus, a Seattle-based writer, director, and producer. Thank you for meeting the moment with your support and responding to the call to action to restore salmon and protect communities!
Last week, WCA’s Puget Sound Program Director, Mindy Roberts, joined community advocates for ‘Puget Sound Day on the Hill’ to advocate for Puget Sound recovery in Washington, DC. Mindy met with Members of Congress from across the country to discuss the importance of clean water and healthy habitats, bipartisan issues that we can all unite on!
On Earth Day, WCA organized actions in three cities across Washington.
Seattle: WCA, in collaboration with the Duwamish River Community Coalition, UpGarden Seattle, and Curvy Cactus, welcomed community members at the KEXP gathering space to honor Earth Day. We hosted outdoor gear giveaways, seed sales, curated thrift shopping, and opportunities to take action for the planet.
Yakima: WCA collaborated with partners ELLA and Poder Latinx to host a clothing swap at the annual Yakima Earth Day festival. It was a huge success to see community members come together for the planet and sustainable fashion!
Longview: WCA held our monthly Cowlitz County organizing meeting at Lower Columbia Community College, then headed over to the Earth Day celebration at Northlake Elementary, Longview!

Federal agencies are reevaluating how the Columbia and Snake Rivers are managed. This is a crucial moment to advocate for the removal of four dams on the lower Snake River, uphold federal commitments to Tribes, and invest in a future in which salmon and communities thrive together. Take action by submitting a comment about why removing the dams is important to you. [[link removed]] Public comments will be accepted until May 9, 2025.
GiveBIG officially kicks off on May 6. We’ve set a goal to raise $25,000 for the Give Big campaign to help fund our work to protect people and nature as one. Every dollar raised for this campaign will be matched, which means you get to double your impact. Give today to support us! [[link removed]]
