A Note From the Desk of Congresswoman Letlow
This week we celebrated Louisiana’s 213th birthday! I’m proud to serve a state with such rich tradition, lively culture, and salt-of-the earth people. It is truly an honor to serve you in Congress, and I will continue to be a voice for Louisiana’s 5th District in the House of Representatives.
The highlight of my week was having the chance to visit with some wonderful students and teachers from Livingston Parish, who came by my office to show me some of the new technology they’ve developed. These students from Denham Springs High School’s STEM program came to Washington to participate in an event hosted by Samsung spotlighting innovative technology developed by students in local schools.
It is my priority to keep constituents informed through multiple avenues. If this is your first time reading this newsletter, visit my website to sign up for future editions! You can also follow my social media profiles and watch interviews where I communicate about important issues.
Please feel free to always reach out to my office directly when you have questions, comments, or concerns. Our team is always accessible through our website by clicking here. We are here to serve you!
Sincerely,
Julia Letlow, Ph.D.
Member of Congress
Stopping Illegal Immigration
One of the biggest accomplishments of the Trump Administration thus far has been the historic reduction in illegal border crossings. Illegal immigration affects communities across the entire country, contributing to public safety issues in communities large and small. Illegal crossings have now sunk to historic lows following President Trump’s reinstatement of successful border security measures. Total migrant crossings are down nearly 100%, and we have ended the Biden Administration’s practice of releasing large numbers of illegal immigrants into the United States. I will continue working to ensure the Trump Administration has the resources they need to keep our country safe. Watch my latest interview on Real America’s Voice describing the need to enforce our immigration laws.
Lowering Taxes for Louisiana Families
Tax and budget matters continue to dominate the conversation in Washington. At the end of 2025 President Trump’s tax cuts (which passed in 2017) will expire, leading to tax increases for families and small businesses. If these tax cuts expire, rates will increase for every income bracket and middle class taxpayers will see their standard deduction cut in half. Even worse, the 40 million American families who receive the Child Tax Credit will see that benefit cut in half. Committees are working this month to move this legislation through Congress, and I am committed to supporting tax relief for Louisiana families. Listen to a clip of my recent radio interview with Brian Haldane in Baton Rouge for more information about my support for lower taxes.
Pursuing More Paid Leave Access
This week, I joined my colleagues in introducing legislation to expand paid leave access. As I travel throughout my district, I constantly hear from parents about the importance of paid time off to care for their newborn babies. Providing families with more access to paid leave is both pro-family and good economics, and our approach is bipartisan and fiscally responsible. Our bill would create a pilot program to incentive states to establish their own paid leave programs, and is fully paid for without raising taxes. As a mom to two young children, I’ve seen the challenges of juggling parenthood with employment. I relished every second with my kids Jacqueline and Jeremiah, and want more Americans to have that ability - without the worry that they’ll miss a paycheck.
Visiting with Constituents in LA-5
We recently wrapped up a two-week district work period, allowing me to spend more time here at home visiting with constituents and listening to their concerns. From Monroe to Baton Rouge, I spoke with many constituents, toured local infrastructure projects, and provided updates on the latest in Congress. I pledge to continue to be an active and accessible voice for Louisiana in Congress.
One of my favorite parts of the district work period was the opportunity to meet with one of my favorite musicians, Christian artist Lauren Daigle! Lauren stopped by my Baton Rouge office and we had a wonderful visit, chatting about our shared faith, her music career, and the programs she’s advocating for to fight human trafficking. I always love seeing fellow Louisianans accomplish big things on the national stage, and Lauren is no exception.
Fighting for Parental Rights
During my time in Congress, I have consistently led the fight to ensure the parent’s voices are heard in the education of our children. This includes passing a “Parent’s Bill of Rights” through the House last Congress, which would ensure that parents have a seat at the table when decisions are made about curriculum or other school matters. While Louisiana has strong protections for parents, national action is needed due to blue states neglecting the voices of parents. We saw this recently with a case taken up by the Supreme Court involving a Maryland school district forcing content onto elementary students despite religious objections from parents. I wrote an opinion piece for the Washington Examiner on this case, highlighting the need for parents to always be in charge of their child’s education.
Constituent Services Wins
The most important part of my job is helping you with issues you may be facing with the federal government. Whether it’s the VA, the IRS, the Social Security Administration or another agency, federal government bureaucracy often holds Americans back. I’m committed to helping my constituents navigate issues with federal agencies when they’re in need of assistance. If you need help, please reach out to my office by visiting letlow.house.gov/services. Additionally, check out what constituents from Monroe and Amite recently had to say about work my office did on their behalf!
