Today, on May 1st–International Workers’ Day–we celebrate worker’s rights, resilience, and the unyielding struggle for a just and equitable future. On May Day, we honor those who stood shoulder to shoulder, fought for justice, and sacrificed so much to build a world that benefits all of us, not just the powerful few. It is because of the workers, organizers, and advocates that came before us that we have the eight-hour workday, the right to organize, and so many other protections we continue to defend in our workplaces, in our communities, and in the halls of power.

We find ourselves in rough political times–it’s been just over 100 days into the second Trump Administration, and people across the country are feeling the impacts. Billionaires are stripping away our social safety net, while authoritarians in the White House violate constitutional rights, erode the rule of law and scapegoat our neighbors. The economic pain from new tariffs and the attacks on working peoples’ rights are hitting our families harder and faster than anyone could have anticipated.

And yet–in the face of all of this–people are not backing down. We are witnessing a powerful groundswell of resistance and resilience:

* Rent control legislation [[link removed]] is waiting for the Governor’s signature in Washington state , which will make it the third state in the country with statewide rent control, a major victory for housing justice and working families.
* A progressive Supreme Court justice won in Wisconsin , despite hundreds of millions funneled into her opposition by Elon Musk and other ultra-wealthy interests.
* More than 900 cities [[link removed]] are participating in May 1st actions across the country today , led by everyday people and a broad coalition of labor unions, social movement organizations, and pro-democracy institutions. Whatever brings them to the streets, people are refusing to sit idly by.

As Gabriela Cartagena, Communications Director of RTTC member organization City Life Vida Urbana recently put it:
“ We will stay loud and continue to organize and connect to be resilient and to protect pro-justice movements and our right to exist in freedom without fear of displacement or deportation. ”

For Right to the City Alliance, the celebration of May Day includes doubling down on our critical work. In just a few weeks, on May 20th, we are joining together with tenants, homeowners, and dozens of community groups across the country to stop the shameful cuts to affordable housing and to fight the billionaires responsible for this runaway housing crisis by passing rent control and implementing permanently affordable housing for all! This May Day, be inspired by the workers of the past and celebrate the working people in your life for their commitment to dignity and justice. Their legacy reminds us that real tangible change is possible when we come together–not just to resist, but to build something better.

Hoy, el Primero de Mayo–Día Internacional de les Trabajadores– celebramos los derechos, la resiliencia y la lucha inflexible de les trabajadores por un futuro justo y equitativo. El Primero de Mayo, honramos a aquelles que se pusieron de pie, hombro con hombro y lucharon por la justicia, y sacrificaron tanto por forjar un mundo que nos beneficie a todes nosotres, no solo a les poques poderoses. Es por les trabajadores, organizadores y defensores que vinieron antes de nosotres que tenemos un día laboral de ocho horas, el derecho a organizar, y tantas otras protecciones que continuamos defendiendo en nuestros lugares de trabajo, nuestras comunidades y en los pasillos del poder.

Nos encontramos en momentos políticos duros-- solo han pasado un poco más de 100 días del segundo término de la Administración de Trump, y las personas a través de todo el país están sintiendo los impactos. Les billonaries están destripando nuestra red de seguridad social, mientras que les autoritaries en la Casa Blanca violan los derechos constitucionales, erosionan la regla del derecho y usan a nuestres vecines de chivos expiatorios. El dolor económico de las nuevas tarifas y los ataques a los derechos de las personas trabajadoras están lastimando a nuestras familias más duro y más rápido de lo que nadie hubiera podido anticipar.

Y aún así–ante todo esto–las personas no se echan atrás. Estamos siendo testigos de una oleada poderosa de resistencia y resiliencia:

* Legislación de control de alquileres [[link removed]] está esperando la firma del Gobernador en el estado de Washington , lo que lo convertirá en el tercer estado en la nación con control de alquileres a nivel estatal, una gran victoria para la justicia de la vivienda y las familias trabajadoras.
* Una juez progresista al Tribunal Supremo ganó en Wisconsin , a pesar de cientos de millones canalizados a su oposición por Elon Musk y otros intereses ultra-ricos.
